Harvey Reaves, a native of Bolivar, Tennessee, embarked on an unconventional path in life, diverging from the traditional pursuits of his peers who were fixated on becoming athletes or musicians. Instead, he demonstrated unwavering determination and focus, steadfastly pursuing a career as a voiceover artist. The influence of his parents, who owned a nightclub in West Tennessee, played a pivotal role in nurturing his early aspirations. They, in fact, became his first clients, entrusting him with the responsibility of writing and voicing commercials for their establishment, Dr. Boogie's (which would later be renamed The Pleasure Time Club). This remarkable opportunity arose when Reaves was just 15 years old, showcasing his exceptional talent and precocity at an incredibly young age.
As Reaves embarked on his collegiate journey at the University of Tennessee, a profound enthusiasm for acting began to unfold, gradually taking center stage in his academic pursuits. In a deliberate effort to nurture this burgeoning passion, he seized the opportunity to enroll in a multitude of theatre classes throughout the day, as well as evening acting classes at the local theatre in Knoxville. This unwavering dedication, a testament to his unrelenting drive, ultimately bore fruit, as he achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the first member of his family to graduate from college, a feat that marked the beginning of a string of "firsts" in his life.
Two days prior to the culmination of his academic journey, Reaves was extended an extraordinary opportunity to become the pioneering Black disc jockey at radio station U-102 in Knoxville, Tennessee, a position that granted him the autonomy to concurrently pursue his aspirations in the acting world. Leveraging his newly acquired free time, Reaves dedicated himself to refining his acting skills, taking on a diverse array of roles in various productions and assuming the role of spokesperson for numerous companies based in Knoxville, Nashville, and Atlanta.
As his reputation as a talented spokesperson began to flourish, Reaves made history by becoming the first Black representative for many of these organizations, showcasing his versatility and range in TV commercials, industrial films, and other mediums.
As a result of his remarkable success in Atlanta, Reaves was presented with a new opportunity to join Peach 94.9, a prominent radio station, where he made history by becoming the first African American DJ to host a primetime show. This groundbreaking achievement not only solidified his position within the Atlanta radio scene but also opened doors to the city's thriving television and film production industry. Reaves seized these opportunities with enthusiasm, eventually making the bold decision to relocate to Los Angeles, where his talent and versatility quickly earned him a wide range of roles in television, film, commercials, and voiceovers.
With a distinctive amalgamation of charisma, physical presence, and a soothing tone, Reaves has established himself as the go-to choice for portraying figures of authority, often taking on the roles of law enforcement officials, medical professionals, and military personnel.
