Biography

He was a renowned Brazilian composer, conductor, cellist, and classical guitarist, widely regarded as "the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music". Throughout his illustrious career, he has become the most well-known South American composer of all time, with a staggering output of over 2000 works by the time of his passing in 1959.

As a prolific composer, he crafted numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental, and vocal pieces, showcasing his versatility and mastery of various styles. His music was heavily influenced by both traditional Brazilian folk music and the European classical tradition, evident in his iconic works such as the "Bachianas Brasileiras" (Brazilian Bachian-pieces) and the "Chôros".

Notably, his "Etudes for classical guitar" (1929) were dedicated to the legendary classical guitarist Andrés Segovia, while his "5 Preludes" (1940) were dedicated to his beloved spouse Arminda Neves d'Almeida, affectionately known as "Mindinha". Both compositions are considered essential works in the classical guitar repertoire.
