Biography

Henri Salvador, a multifaceted French Caribbean entertainer, emerged onto the scene on July 18, 1917, in Cayenne, French Guiana, a region steeped in rich cultural heritage. Born to parents Clovis and Antonine Paterne, both hailing from the picturesque island of Guadeloupe, French West Indies, Salvador's family background was characterized by a blend of Caribbean and French influences. He was the eldest of three siblings, with a brother named André and a sister named Alice, who would later play important roles in his life and career.

Salvador's illustrious musical journey commenced as a guitarist, providing accompaniment to other talented vocalists, where he honed his skills by meticulously imitating the intricate recordings of the legendary Django Reinhardt.

Throughout the 1940s, Salvador had the privilege of collaborating with Reinhardt himself, recording a plethora of songs penned by the renowned poet and writer Boris Vian, with the esteemed arranger Quincy Jones lending his expertise to the project.

Salvador's remarkable career spanned many years, during which he had the pleasure of sharing the stage with the illustrious Ray Ventura and His Collegians, where he showcased his impressive vocal range, dynamic dance moves, and even displayed his comedic talents in a variety of entertaining skits.

The multifaceted individual in question has made his mark on the cinematic world by featuring in a multitude of films, including the 1950 production "Nous irons à Monte-Carlo", the 1949 release "Nous irons à Paris", and the 1948 cinematic endeavour "Mademoiselle s'amuse".

Salvador's impressive television career in the 1960s spanned numerous popular variety shows on French television, with a standout hit in 1964 being the captivating "Zorro est arrivé". This notable achievement is just one aspect of his enduring fame, which is largely attributed to his unmistakable, infectious, and sidesplitting laugh that has become an integral theme in many of his humorous songs.

In addition to his extensive work in television, Salvador made a significant mark in the music world, as evident in his 1969 recording of "Mais non, mais non", a variation of the iconic song "Mah Nà Mah Nà". This rendition featured original French lyrics penned by Salvador himself, set to the catchy melody composed by Piero Umiliani.

Salvador's song "Dans mon île", a melodic masterpiece crafted in 1957, is often credited with having a profound impact on the illustrious Brazilian composer Antônio Carlos Jobim, whose own work in the bossa nova style owes a debt to this iconic tune.

Notably, the renowned Brazilian singer-songwriter Caetano Veloso played a pivotal role in introducing Henri Salvador to Brazilian audiences, as he did so by featuring the French musician in his own song "Reconvexo".

Salvador, a seasoned veteran of the voice-over industry, brought his distinctive tone to the role of Sebastian the crab in the 1989 French dubbing of Disney's beloved animated film, The Little Mermaid, at the ripe age of 70.

As a testament to his enduring legacy, recordings of his iconic rendition of the song "Embrasse-la" ("Kiss the Girl") can still be found and enjoyed on the popular video-sharing platform YouTube.
