Biography

Henri Storck, a renowned Belgian author, film-maker, and documentarist, was born in Ostend in 1907 and passed away on September 17, 1999.

Storck's notable achievements include directing the film "Misère au Borinage" in 1933, in collaboration with Joris Ivens, which tells the story of the miners in the Borinage area. In 1938, he co-founded the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique (Royal Belgian Film Archive) with Andre Thirifays and Pierre Vermeylen.

Throughout his illustrious career, Storck appeared in two pivotal films in the history of cinema. He played the role of a priest in Jean Vigo's "Zéro de conduite" in 1933 and a customer of a prostitute in Chantal Akerman's "Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quay Commercial, 1080 Brussels" in 1976.

In her book "It's been going on for 100 years: a history of the francophone cinema of Belgium," Jacqueline Aubenas eloquently described Storck's personality, stating that he was not a militant in the classical sense, but rather a generous individual who consistently chose the right path, both ethically and aesthetically, and was always at the forefront of the battle.
