Hilary Mason, a talented television character actress, spent nearly five decades captivating audiences with her diverse range of roles. Although she appeared in numerous productions, Mason is perhaps most iconic for her chilling portrayal of the blind, psychic Heather in the 1973 supernatural thriller Don't Look Now.
In this eerie film, directed by Nicolas Roeg, Mason's character communicates with the grieving couple, Laura and John Baxter, claiming to have seen their deceased daughter, Christine. Heather's messages, which initially bring comfort to Laura, ultimately predict John's demise at the hands of a mysterious female dwarf.
Born in Birmingham in 1917, Mason received a scholarship to the London School of Dramatic Art before honing her craft in repertory theater. During World War II, she entertained troops with the Ensa organization.
Mason made her television debut in Thunder in the West (1957) and went on to appear in various series, including Swizzlewick (1964),United! (1965),Coronation Street (1960, 1976),Z Cars (1962),Dixon of Dock Green (1955),and The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1970).
In addition to her dramatic roles, Mason showcased her comedic talents in My Brother's Keeper (1975),Maid Marian and Her Merry Men (1989),and Ripping Yarns (1976). She also appeared in the children's series One Foot in the Grave (1990) during the 1990s.
Mason's extensive filmography includes appearances in Sharon's Baby (1975),Dolls (1987),Afraid of the Dark (1991),and Haunted (1995). Throughout her illustrious career, Mason remained married to her husband, Roger Ostime, for 50 years until her passing in 2006 in Milton Keynes, England.
