Huang Wenyong, a Malaysia-born Singaporean actor of Chinese descent, was affectionately referred to as "Ah Ge" (senior actor) by local media and fellow colleagues due to his esteemed status in the industry. Tragically, he passed away on April 20, 2013, at the age of 60, at the Singapore General Hospital, succumbing to lymphoma.
Prior to his acting career, Huang was a teacher in Kuala Lumpur, but he later moved to Singapore in the 1970s with only fifty dollars in his pocket. He joined the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation in 1977, marking the beginning of his illustrious career.
Huang is perhaps best known for his roles in The Awakening and The Seletar Robbery during the 1980s. He also starred alongside Chew Chor Meng in the long-running popular series Don't Worry, Be Happy (1996–2002) and its spin-off Lobang King, where he played the lovable but stingy uncle Leon Ong Kim Lye to Chew's character Ah Bee.
Throughout his career, Huang was a household name, earning numerous nominations and awards, including being named one of the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes every year at the Star Awards from 1994 until his passing in 2013. In total, he starred in more than a hundred Chinese-language television programmes, solidifying his position as one of the pioneers in local Chinese drama.
In addition to his acting career, Huang also dabbled in singing, releasing two albums and performing pieces for a few television sitcoms. He was an ambassador for anti-ageing product company Zell-V and was an actor for MediaCorp from the late 1970s until his death.
