Biography

Here is the biography of Ian Emes:

Ian Emes is a British film director, animator, artist, writer, and pioneer of experimental film techniques. He is famous for his work with Pink Floyd, and his career spans both animation and live-action. Drawing is at the core of his practice, and he has won numerous awards, including three BAFTAs and an Oscar nomination.

Born in Handsworth, Birmingham in 1949, Emes' early visual influences included glorious color comics of the 1950s, such as "The Eagle" and "Boys World", and "Flash Gordon" films shown at Saturday Morning Minors at Odeon cinemas.

Emes studied at the West of England College of Art in 1967 and later at Birmingham College of Art, where he gained a First Class Honours Degree in Painting and Sculpture. He also studied art history, specializing in Surreismal and the Dadaist movement.

In the early 1970s, Emes was part of the Experimental Workshop, where he made 8mm films with hand-built sets and models under the tutelage of artist Roger Westwood. He later worked at Birmingham Polytechnic, where he developed his animation skills and made his first animated film, "French Windows", which was screened on BBC's "The Old Grey Whistle Test" and caught the attention of Pink Floyd.

Emes worked with Pink Floyd on several projects, including the iconic "Time" sequence for "The Dark Side of the Moon" and the animated film "The Wall". He also collaborated with other musicians, such as Mike Oldfield, Paul and Linda McCartney, The Who, Duran Duran, and Roger Waters.

In the 1980s, Emes transitioned from animation to live-action, directing films such as "The Magic Shop", "Goodie-Two-Shoes", and "Knights & Emeralds". He also wrote and directed several television shows and commercials, including "The Yob" and "How to Be Cool".

In the 1990s, Emes worked in-house as a director at Ridley Scott's London-based commercials production company, Ridley Scott Associates, winning numerous awards. He also directed several films and television shows, including "The Munsters' Scary Little Christmas" and "Deadly Summer".

In recent years, Emes has continued to work in film and television, directing projects such as "The Invisible Man", "Sir Gadabout the Worst Knight in the Land", "Bookaboo", and "Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds". He has also worked on several Pink Floyd projects, including "The Endless River" and "Nothing Part 14".
