José Ignacio Retes Guevara, a Mexican artist of exceptional versatility, made a profound impact on the world of entertainment through his extensive work in playwriting, film, theater, and television. His impressive portfolio earned him the distinction of being a two-time winner of the esteemed Ariel Award, a testament to his remarkable talent and dedication to his craft.

Notably, in the year 1937, a pivotal moment in his illustrious career, Retes co-founded the esteemed University Theater of San Luis Potosí, a cultural institution that would go on to make a significant impact on the local artistic scene.

Furthermore, he went on to establish a second theater company, Lantern Magic, in a collaborative effort with dedicated workers from the Mexican Union of Electricians. This innovative partnership not only fostered a sense of community but also provided a platform for the workers to express themselves creatively.

Additionally, Retes co-founded the company Midnight Theater alongside the renowned Usigli, a partnership that would yield remarkable artistic results. Moreover, he worked as an assistant to the esteemed Sano, honing his skills and gaining valuable experience in the process.

It was the year 1950 that witnessed the inaugural directorial endeavour of Retes, as he brought to life the theatrical production of "Los cuadrantes de la soledad", a masterpiece penned by the illustrious José Revueltas. This inaugural venture proved to be a resounding success, with the production receiving a remarkable 100 performances.

Noted playwright, Retes, embarked on his creative journey by scripting his inaugural work, "El día de Mañana", in the year 1944. This marked the beginning of his illustrious film career, which unfolded in the 1950s under the guidance of renowned directors such as Jorge Fons, Felipe Cazals, Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, Sergio Olhovich, and the accomplished Arturo Ripstein.

Not only was Retes a renowned artist, but he also held a significant position as the director of the theaters for the Mexican Social Security Institute, known as IMSS, where he played a crucial role in the development and construction of numerous public theaters, ultimately resulting in the establishment of a total of thirty-eight venues.

During the 1960s, Retes formed a close and productive partnership with the esteemed writer Vicente Leñero, with whom he collaborated on the creation of various notable works, including theatrical adaptations of "Los albañiles" and "Los Niños de Sánchez", among other notable productions.

Notable achievements in the realm of theater led to the esteemed Hidalgo-Ignacio Retes Theater in Mexico City being formally dedicated in his honor, a testament to his profound influence on the art form, in the year 2006.
