Ilppo Pohjola is an independent filmmaker and producer who explores the structural and social elements of film to push the boundaries of the medium's physical possibilities. He works at the intersection of Hollywood's narrative tropes and independent film's deconstructive methodologies, resulting in a body of work characterized by crisp conception and excess of information. Despite his focus on formal elements, Pohjola's content is surprisingly physical and sensual, often bordering on assaultive.
Pohjola has studied at the Center for Advanced Film and Television Studies at the American Film Institute, the Media Arts Department at Sheridan College in Toronto, and the Faculty of Art, Design and Film at Harrow College of Higher Education in London.
Throughout his career, Pohjola has received numerous awards and accolades, including the Audience Award at the Kettupäivät festival in Helsinki, Finland, the Quality Production Award from the National Council for Audiovisual Arts in Helsinki, and the Special Prize of the Jury at the Tampere Film Festival in Finland. His film "P(l)ain Truth" won several awards, including the Teddy Bear for Best Short Film at the Berlin International Film Festival, the Main Prize at the Tampere Film Festival, and the Seta Apple Award in Helsinki.
