As a young hockey player, Lenßen played for the Krefelder EV's junior team. He then pursued a degree in law at the University of Konstanz from 1982 to 1986. After completing his referendariat in Rio de Janeiro in 1988 and passing the bar exam in 1989, Lenßen studied European studies at the European Institute of the University of Saarland in Saarbrücken from 1989 to 1990. Upon receiving his license to practice law in 1990, he worked as a partner at the law firm Müller, Lenßen, Beck in Meersburg until 2003. In his own law firm in Bodman-Ludwigshafen, Lenßen is a specialist in criminal law and family and inheritance law.
