J. Mills Goodloe began his career at Warner Brothers, where he worked under the direction of Richard Donner, whose credits include Superman, The Omen, Scrooged, and the Lethal Weapon series. From 1992 to 1995, Goodloe served as an assistant to Donner on Lethal Weapon 3 and Maverick.
In 1996, Goodloe was appointed president of Richard Donner Productions, a position he held for four years. During this time, he produced Assassins, starring Sylvester Stallone and Julianne Moore, Conspiracy Theory, starring Mel Gibson and Julia Roberts, and the final installment of the Lethal Weapon series, featuring Mel Gibson, Rene Russo, Danny Glover, and Chris Rock.
In 2001, Goodloe left Richard Donner Productions to pursue a career in writing and directing. His first project was the film A Gentleman's Game, starring Gary Sinise, Dylan Baker, and Philip Baker Hall. The film received an ESPY nomination for Best Sports Film.
Goodloe's subsequent projects included adapting two John Grisham novels, "Bleachers" for Revolution Studios and "Playing for Pizza" for Phoenix Pictures. In 2012, he wrote the screenplay for the inspirational sports biopic "Pride," released theatrically by Lionsgate, starring Terrence Howard and Bernie Mac.
In 2014, Relativity Media released Goodloe's adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' best-selling novel "Best of Me," starring Michelle Monaghan and James Marsden. He also wrote the screenplay for The Age of Adaline, an original film released by Lionsgate in 2015, starring Blake Lively and Harrison Ford.
Goodloe's subsequent projects included adapting the New York Times' bestselling novel Everything, Everything, released by Warner Bros. in 2017, starring Amandla Stenberg and Nick Robinson. He also wrote the screenplay for The Mountain Between Us, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2019, starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba.
In 2020, Goodloe wrote the screenplay for To All the Boys I've Loved Before, which became Netflix's most viewed Young Adult title in the streamer's history. He is also working on a remake of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby with Amazon Studios, starring Lana Condor, and is set to begin principal photography in the Spring 2024.
Additionally, Goodloe is writing and producing an "Age of Adaline" television series with Blake Lively, as well as adapting the novel How to Be Remembered for producer Elizabeth Cantillon and MRC Entertainment.
