Biography

Jack Barry was born on March 20, 1918, in Lindenhurst, New York, to parents Cecelia (Hepner) and Max Solomon Barasch.

As he entered adulthood, Barry took up saloon work, but his career trajectory took a dramatic turn when Dan Enright suggested they venture into television game shows.

This marked the beginning of Barry's illustrious career in television, which included hosting the groundbreaking interactive show Winky Dink and You, a true pioneer in the realm of interactive television.

His hosting duties didn't stop there, as he went on to host Juvenile Jury and Life Begins at 80, showcasing his versatility and range as a television personality.

In 1956, Barry hosted a trifecta of game shows, including Twenty-One, Tic Tac Dough, and the first four episodes of Concentration, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in the world of television game shows.

However, Barry's career was not without controversy, as he was involved in the quiz show scandals that brought down Barry & Enright productions.

The 1960s saw Barry hosting the unsuccessful Reel Game, but he bounced back in 1972 with The Joker's Wild, a show that would prove to be a highlight of his career.

In 1976, Barry produced a revival of Break the Bank, with the inimitable Tom Kennedy as emcee, but despite its initial success, it was ultimately canceled after just 15 weeks.

Undeterred, Barry went on to host a syndicated version of the show, which, unfortunately, proved to be equally unsuccessful.

The 1970s also saw the creation of two more game shows, Blank Check in 1975 and Play the Percentages in 1980, both of which were met with varying degrees of success.

Barry's final creation was Hot Potato, which debuted in 1984 and featured the inimitable Bill Cullen as emcee.

Sadly, Jack Barry's life was cut short in May 1984, when he suffered a cardiac arrest while jogging in Central Park and passed away at the age of 66.

He was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, leaving behind a legacy that would be remembered for generations to come.

In the years following his death, Bill Cullen took the reins, and Kline and Friends was formed by Richard Kline, a testament to Barry's enduring impact on the world of television.
