Jalal Merhi, a globally renowned action-film producer/director, has achieved unparalleled success in delivering over 20 films worldwide within a decade, along with numerous short film projects.
Born in Brazil to Lebanese parents, Jalal emigrated to Canada to pursue his education and eventually expanded his family's jewelry business, while maintaining his passion for competitive martial arts and keeping his focus on his true love: filmmaking.
He sold his share in a downtown Toronto building and his jewelry business, utilizing the funds, along with additional investment from his diamond dealers, to establish the film production company Film One in 1989.
Since its inception, Film One has established itself as a prominent player in the lucrative action genres, with Merhi's dedication to high production values evident on the screen. His commercial acumen and organizational skills have made him one of Canada's most prolific and successful producers.
Jalal began his martial arts training with Tae Kwon Do, achieving a 2nd dan in Shotokan, a master in Choy Lay Fut, and hung gar. He participated in over 150 tournaments with remarkable success. This led to his being approached by a producer for a movie role, although the project ultimately did not come to fruition.
However, this encounter introduced him to numerous influential individuals, sparking the beginning of his career. He has since collaborated with renowned martial-arts legends such as Bolo Yeung, Cynthia Rothrock, and Billy Blanks, growing to become a respected martial arts choreographer and director.
