Jim, a multiple Emmy Award nominee, is a master of his craft, effortlessly transitioning between comedy and drama. With an impressive resume, he has directed a vast array of cable and broadcast series, including ABC's Desperate Housewives and HBO's groundbreaking series The Sopranos.
With a strong foundation in film, Jim graduated from New York University Graduate Film School with a Master of Fine Arts degree. He began his career as a cinematographer in New York, where he won the prestigious Hong Kong award for best cinematography for his work on An Autumn's Tale. His extensive filmography includes Tokyo Pop, the feature film version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the acclaimed television show Northern Exposure, for which he earned a DGA award nomination for the episode "Jules & Joel".
In the years that followed, Jim directed numerous pilots, including Dangerous Minds and To Have and To Hold, as well as episodes of The Sopranos, ER, Law & Order, House, and Desperate Housewives, among others. Additionally, he worked as an Executive Producer on Judging Amy, Joan of Arcadia, Ugly Betty, To Have and To Hold, and Dangerous Minds, several of which garnered various awards, including 2 Emmy nods and 1 Golden Globe win.
Jim's documentary filmmaking skills have also been showcased in the film The Man From Hope, which followed Bill and Hilary Clinton through the 1992 campaign and was featured at the Democratic Convention that year. The film was later hailed as a strategic aspect of Bill Clinton's victory in the election. In recent years, Jim has traveled to central India to document the 50th anniversary of the East West Gathering.
In his personal life, Jim is married to actress Annie Potts, with whom he has three children, Clay, Doc, and Harry.
