Jamie Alvey's journey into the world of horror began with a passion for scary stories as a child, nurtured by a horror fan mother and a cinephile father. Growing up, she was surrounded by a diverse range of media, which fueled her voracious appetite for reading, writing, and acting.
As a child and teenager, Alvey's life was marked by intense bullying, leading her to retreat into her books and her own short stories. Initially, these stories were influenced by her love for the Twilight series, but as she grew older, she found her unique voice as a creative writer.
After graduating summa cum laude with a BA in English and theatre from Brescia University, Alvey went on to earn her MA in English literature from Mercy College. She then began teaching at Brescia University as an English and writing professor.
In 2017, Alvey completed the first draft of her feature screenplay, Bystanders, which would become a labor of love and a testament to her growth as a writer. The screenplay was heavily influenced by her own experiences with PTSD and her rage against rape culture and toxic masculinity.
After years of refinement, Bystanders was finally brought to life in 2023, with Alvey starring as Clare. During production, she took on multiple roles, including uncredited directing and artistic choices, to ensure the film's success.
Following the completion of Bystanders, Alvey struggled with depression and isolation, which led her to revisit an old story idea. This idea evolved into the proof of concept short, "Your Husband Was a Good Man," which explores themes of grief, depression, trauma, and death.
The short film gained success on the festival circuit, prompting Alvey to consider filming it herself and taking on the roles of director and executive producer. This decision led her to establish her own production company, Love and Horror Productions, and offer internship opportunities to college students interested in screenwriting and filmmaking.
In March 2024, Alvey shot "Your Husband Was a Good Man," starring alongside Deaton Gabbard. The short is currently in post-production.
In addition to her work in filmmaking, Alvey is pursuing an MFA in creative writing with an emphasis in fiction from Lindenwood University. She plans to continue her education by earning a doctorate in gothic studies in the future.
