Jason Soo is a multifaceted artist who has garnered recognition for his outstanding work, including the prestigious Jacques Derrida Exhibition and Prize in Melbourne, back in 1999.
As a filmmaker, Soo's debut narrative piece, "A Short Film on The May 13 Generation", delves into a pivotal moment in Singapore's history, specifically the events of 1954 when approximately 800 students occupied Chinese High School to advocate for their classmates who were being affected by military conscription.
Soo's subsequent work, "1987: Untracing the Conspiracy", sheds light on the arrest, torture, and interrogation of 22 individuals accused of being Marxist conspirators by Singapore's secret police. This thought-provoking documentary earned the Best Southeast Asian Feature award at the Freedom Film Festival in Malaysia in 2015.
Furthermore, an extended version of this film is currently in production, promising to provide an even more in-depth exploration of this significant event in Singapore's past.
