Biography

Jean-Louis Barrault was a renowned French stage actor, director, and producer born on September 8, 1910. A talented tragedian and mime, he played a crucial role in reviving French theatre after World War II by presenting world premieres of works by playwrights such as Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco, and Jean Genet.

Initially, Barrault was a teacher and studied art before pursuing a career in theatre. He was a gifted student of Charles Dullin and Etienne Decroux, and supported himself by working as a bookkeeper and flower salesman during his early years. Barrault made his film debut in Vagabonds imaginaires (1950) and took his first curtain call a year later in "Volpone" at the Theatre de l'Atelier.

Barrault's passion for theatre led him to join the Comedie Francaise in 1940 as both an actor and director. He met his wife, Madeleine Renaud, in 1936 and married her four years later. Together, they founded several theatres, including the Renaud-Barrault Paris stage company in 1947, and toured extensively, becoming one of the most celebrated couples in European theatre.

Barrault's Broadway debut came in 1952, and he received a special Tony award for his work. He worked with some of the greatest directors, including Abel Gance, Georg Wilhelm Pabst, Sacha Guitry, Jean Delannoy, Max Ophüls, and Jean Renoir. Barrault's portrayal of Baptiste in Children of Paradise (1945) is considered one of his most notable triumphs on film and has had a lasting impact on the art of pantomime.

In later years, Barrault served as director of the Theatre des Nations and the Theatre d'Orsay. His last film performance was in La lumière du lac (1988),and he died of a heart attack in Paris on January 22, 1994, at the age of 83.
