Margaret Taylor, known as the "Iron Lady" of the White House, was the wife of President Zachary Taylor and the First Lady of the United States from 1849 until her husband's untimely death in 1850. Born on November 21, 1788, in Lynchburg, Virginia, Margaret was the daughter of Richard and Ann Mackall Smith.

Margaret's early life was marked by tragedy, as her father died when she was just a child, and her mother remarried a few years later. She grew up in a household that valued education, and she received a solid foundation in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Her mother's second husband, George Smith, was a kind and gentle man who played a significant role in shaping Margaret's early years.

In 1809, Margaret married James Pleasants, a lawyer from Virginia, and the couple had one daughter, Ann Mackall Taylor. However, the marriage was not a happy one, and the couple eventually divorced. Margaret's second marriage, to Zachary Taylor, took place in 1810, and the couple had three children together: Ann, Sarah, and Richard.

As First Lady, Margaret Taylor was known for her simplicity and humility. She preferred to focus on her domestic duties, rather than engaging in public affairs. Despite her reserved nature, Margaret was deeply devoted to her husband and played an important role in supporting him throughout his military career.

Tragically, Zachary Taylor's sudden death in 1850 left Margaret a widow at the age of 61. She spent the remainder of her life in retirement, living on her plantation in Virginia. Margaret Taylor passed away on October 14, 1852, at the age of 63, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated wife and mother.
