However, his desire for adventure and service led him to sign up for the Royal Flying Corps in 1917, where he unfortunately suffered an aeroplane crash during training, resulting in his invalidation from the service.
After his military stint, Jeffrey returned to his roots and trained as a solicitor, eventually practicing law in Shoreham. However, his true calling was in the world of arts, and he eventually made a break with his first major success, the play "Payment Deferred", in 1932. Jeffrey's personal life was just as eventful, with four marriages to Brenda Maude Cullum, Eileen Weatherstone, Jill Craigie, and Barbara Poxon.
