Jeremy Thomas's family background was deeply rooted in the film industry, with his father, Ralph Thomas, being a renowned film director, particularly for his work on the 'Doctor' film series. Additionally, his uncle, Gerald Thomas, was the director of the iconic "Carry On" film series. As a child, Jeremy spent his holidays on film locations or in studios, which instilled in him a passion for filmmaking from a young age. By the time he was 10 years old, his sole ambition was to make films.
Initially, Jeremy aimed to become a director, but he eventually found success as a producer. He began his career in school, working in the processing labs before moving on to assist in the cutting rooms and eventually becoming an editor. His big break came when he collaborated with director Philippe Mora on the film 'Brother Can You Spare a Dime.' In 1974, he accompanied Philippe to Australia and produced his first film, 'Mad Dog Morgan,' which Philippe directed.
After spending two years in Australia, Jeremy returned to Britain and worked on 'The Shout,' which went on to win the prestigious Grand Prix de Jury at the Cannes Film Festival. This success propelled him into the producing circuit, where he worked on a diverse range of films, including 'The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle,' 'Bad Timing,' and 'Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.'
In 1985, Jeremy set up his own film distribution company, Record Releasing, and acquired the Gate Cinema in London's Notting Hill Gate and the Cameo Cinema in Edinburgh. His achievements did not go unnoticed, as he was awarded the Vittorio de Sica prize in 1986. The following year, he was honored with an invitation to join the Cannes Film Festival Jury.
