JG Thirlwell is a multifaceted composer, producer, and performer based in Brooklyn, New York. Born in Melbourne, Australia, he relocated to London in 1978 and later moved to New York City in 1983, where he has resided ever since.
Thirlwell's prolific career has spanned numerous pseudonyms, including Manorexia, Foetus, Xordox, Steroid Maximus, Baby Zizanie, Hydroze Plus, Clint Ruin, and Wiseblood, showcasing his versatility and range as an artist.
As a composer, Thirlwell has made significant contributions to television, creating the musical score for the Adult Swim/Cartoon Network show "The Venture Bros" and, in 2015, scoring the Emmy-winning show "Archer". His film scores include features such as "The Blue Eyes" and "Chuy" for Mexican director Eva Aridjis, as well as the score for Tony Oursler's film "Imponderable", which was showcased as an installation at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Throughout his career, Thirlwell has released over thirty albums, characterized by a dramatic intensity and an evocative, cinematic quality. He has also collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Karen O, Noveller, Excepter, Zola Jesus, Melvins, Swans, Nine Inch Nails, Lydia Lunch, Coil, Z's, and Nick Cave, among many others.
As a commissioned composer, Thirlwell has worked with renowned ensembles such as Kronos Quartet, Bang On A Can, Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Experiments in Opera, Zephyr Quartet, League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots, and Jeffrey Zeigler, among others. In 2010, he received a fellowship from the New York Foundation of the Arts in sound/composition, and in 2015, he was nominated for an Annie Award for his work on "The Venture Bros".
