Joanna Johnston is a renowned costume designer, celebrated for her exceptional talent and versatility in the film industry. She has collaborated with prominent directors such as Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis, providing costumes for a wide range of films that span different eras, styles, and genres.
Johnston began her career as an assistant costume designer under the guidance of Anthony Powell, working on notable films like Death on the Nile, Tess, Evil Under the Sun, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Her impressive work on the latter caught the attention of Spielberg, who subsequently entrusted her with the task of designing costumes for The Color Purple.
Her first solo costume designer job was on Hellraiser, followed by a long-term association with Zemeckis, with whom she worked on a string of successful films, including Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Back to the Future Part II, Back to the Future Part III, Death Becomes Her, Forrest Gump, Contact, Cast Away, The Polar Express, and Allied.
