Jorge Michel Grau's academic background is marked by a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, which he earned between 1994 and 1998. He furthered his education by graduating with honors in Film Direction from the Centro de Capacitacion Cinematografica (CCC) in Mexico.
In his professional career, Jorge began as a producer of documentaries, cultural, and educational television programs. He has also worked as a production manager on various films produced by the Mexican Film Institute, the CCC, and independent productions.
In 2004, Jorge specialized in film direction at the Escola Superior de Cinema I Audivisuals de Catalunya (ESCAC) in Barcelona, Spain, where he received a scholarship from FONCA (National Fund for Culture and Arts) to support his studies.
In 2005, he studied Stage Direction at the National University Theatre School (CUT) with Raul Quintanilla and Art Direction with professor Alejandro Luna at the CCC.
As a film director, Jorge has worked on short films from 2003 to 2007. He made his feature film debut with the film "Somos lo que hay" (also known as "We are what we are"),which premiered at the 42nd Director's Fortnight (Quinzaine des Realisateurs) at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010.
The film received critical acclaim and was selected for the Camara D'or and the New York Film Festival in 2010. It also won several awards, including the Silver Hugo Special Jury Prize for the international feature competition at the Chicago International Film Festival, the Sequense Prize at the Fantasia International Film Festival, and the Best Picture and Script Next Wave at the Fantastic Fest.
Jorge has also been involved in various film-related projects, including the Young Producer's Lab at the Morelia International Film Festival and the Visionary Talent Campus at the Guadalajara International Film Festival in 2008.
As an educator, Jorge has taught Production, Assistant Direction, and Set Logistics at the Centro de Capacitacion Cinematografica (CCC) and has also served as an advisor for thesis projects. He has also taught Film Production at the Extracurricular Program at the Political and Social Sciences Faculty of the National Autonomous University (UNAM) and Film Direction at KMZ Workshops.
In addition to his work in film, Jorge has also published an article titled "Un pays pris en otage parl'insecurite" in the "Le Monde Magazine, Special Cinema" in France during the Cannes Film Festival in 2010.
