Biography

Judith Rascoe, a gifted and accomplished writer, came into this world and spent her formative years in the sun-kissed state of California, where her early life was intricately woven with the rich tapestry of literature. The seeds of her future literary endeavors were sown during her childhood, as her uncle, the erudite and discerning critic Burton Rascoe, would frequently share his television scripts with her, thereby kindling a passion for writing that would eventually blossom into a lifelong pursuit.

She embarked on a prestigious academic journey at Stanford University, where she had the unique opportunity to hone her writing skills under the mentorship of the illustrious author Wallace Stegner.

As she progressed in her craft, her early work began to garner significant attention from literary circles, with renowned critic Mark Schorer singling her out as one of the most promising young writers of the early 1970s.

This notable recognition was subsequently published in the esteemed Esquire magazine, further solidifying her reputation as a rising star in the literary world.

Rascoe's academic endeavors led her to the esteemed University of Bristol, where she embarked on a year-long sojourn as a Fulbright Scholar, a prestigious award that recognizes outstanding academic achievements. Prior to her departure from the United States, she spent a brief period teaching in England, gaining valuable experience in the education sector before ultimately returning to her homeland.

As she pursued her academic endeavors at Harvard University, she simultaneously devoted a significant amount of time to a supplementary endeavor, serving as a reader for the esteemed Atlantic Monthly publication, further honing her writing prowess in the process.

This impressive display of literary talent ultimately led to a prestigious opportunity, wherein she was appointed as a fiction instructor at Yale University, a renowned institution of higher learning, where she was able to share her expertise and knowledge with students, fostering a love of literature and writing within the next generation of scholars.

The turning point in her career arrived when renowned producer Joseph Strick, a stalwart in the film industry, extended an invitation to her to craft a screenplay inspired by her captivating short story, "A Lot of Cowboys". This pivotal project gradually evolved into the 1974 cinematic masterpiece, Road Movie. Her impressive literary prowess did not go unnoticed, as esteemed author Robert Stone, a celebrated wordsmith in his own right, warmly endorsed her to adapt his highly acclaimed novel, DOG SOLDIERS, into a screenplay, which ultimately materialized as the 1978 film, Who'll Stop the Rain.
