Biography

Judy Jean Kwon's life journey began in a Korean-American video store, where she developed a deep passion for filmmaking and storytelling. Born in Los Angeles to Korean immigrant parents, Kwon spent her childhood splitting time between Korea and America, feeling like she didn't quite belong anywhere. This sense of displacement led her to turn to music and the arts as a way to express herself.

As a teenager, Kwon started acting, and after five years of training, she embarked on a successful commercial career, breaking down barriers for East Asian American actors by taking on non-stereotypical roles. Her first major job was with Tarsem in the iconic "Philip's flat TV" commercial, where she beat out over 300 white actors to land the lead role. This achievement not only marked a milestone for Kwon but also paved the way for non-white actors to compete for roles.

Throughout her career, Kwon has worked with renowned photographers and directors, including Herb Ritts and Steven Meisel, and has appeared in over 100 commercials. She also made history by playing the lead in one of the first digital feature films to screen at the Sundance Film Festival.

Kwon's creative talents extend far beyond acting. She has moonlighted as a director, casting director, editor, writer, and photographer, and has even created her own scripted comedy series, "MILFriend," which premiered on Elizabeth Banks' platform for funny women. Additionally, she hosts an interview series, "Heal X Create," where she talks to artists and healers about stress, anxiety, and PTSD.

Kwon's education has been diverse, with stints at A.B.C.'s director fellowship, L.A.C.C. for cinema, Santa Monica College for photography, and U.C.L.A. for writing. Her ultimate goal is to give voice to the voiceless and tell the stories of underdogs who are often ignored. She is a passionate advocate for women's rights and immigrant stories, and her work continues to inspire and empower others.
