Biography

Julia Lockwood, the daughter of renowned British film star Margaret Lockwood, embarked on an acting career at a tender age of five when she was enrolled in a theatrical school. Her parents' subsequent separation and divorce when she was just eight years old led to her being cared for by a nanny, with her mother remaining involved in her life and gently guiding her into the world of entertainment.

Julia's film debut came in 1947 with a minor role in Daphne Du Maurier's "Hungry Hill". She also shared the stage with her mother on several occasions. In 1953, Julia landed the role of the juvenile lead in a television adaptation of Johanna Spyri's classic novel "Heidi". Her portrayal of Heidi earned her a reprisal in a BBC children's serial the following year.

By the end of the decade, Julia had transitioned from standard teenage family fare to bawdy comedy, starring in films such as "Please Turn Over" (1959),directed by Gerald Thomas, the regular helmsman of the Carry On franchise. In the 1960s, Julia alternated between stage and TV work, appearing in productions like "Peter Pan" and "Arsenic and Old Lace".

Julia co-starred with her mother in the films "The Royalty" (1957) and "The Flying Swan" (1965),which followed the daily lives of the staff and guests at a posh London hotel. Her last recurring role was in the short-lived sitcom "Birds on the Wing" (1971),which ran for just six episodes.

Julia married character actor Ernest Clark, best known for his role as Sir Geoffrey Loftus in the 1970s "Doctor" comedies, in December 1972. The couple retired to their 14th-century Somerset farmhouse in 1976, where Julia devoted herself to raising a family.
