David Kimbrough, better known as Junior Kimbrough, was born in Hudsonville, Mississippi, in 1930. Growing up, he developed a passion for music, particularly blues, by listening to the records of renowned artists such as Mississippi Fred McDowell. As a child, he learned to play the guitar, laying the foundation for a lifelong career in music.
In 1968, Junior Kimbrough made his first record, "Tramp", which was followed by several more singles. Despite his local fame in Mississippi, he remained relatively unknown outside the state. This could be attributed to the fact that, in addition to being a performer, he also owned and operated "juke joints", small clubs that catered to African American audiences in the Mississippi Delta and "hill country" region.
Junior Kimbrough's careers as a performer and club owner kept him largely confined to Mississippi, limiting his exposure to a wider audience. However, in 1992, he appeared in the documentary "Deep Blues", alongside contemporaries R.L. Burnside and Big Jack Johnson. This exposure led to the recording of his first album, "All Night Long", for Fat Possum Records around the same time.
The album, which received widespread critical acclaim from prestigious music publications such as "Rolling Stone", finally brought Junior Kimbrough to the attention of audiences outside of Mississippi. His music, characterized by its unique blend of blues and hill country styles, resonated with fans worldwide, cementing his legacy as a blues legend.
