Kamala Lopez is a legendary artist and bilingual actress who has had a long and illustrious career in the entertainment industry. Born in New York City to a mother from Madras, India, and a Venezuelan father, Lopez lived in Caracas until the age of fourteen, studying in British and American schools.
Lopez began her acting career at a young age, starring in CTW's "Sesame Street" as Mercedes, Maria's cousin, for two seasons. She then attended Yale University, where she majored in Theatre Studies and Philosophy.
After graduating, Lopez continued her acting training with some of the world's most renowned acting teachers, including Sanford Meisner, Sylvain L'Hermitte, Milton Katselas, Jerzi Grotowski, Juan Carlos Corazza, Gunnar Rohrbacher, and Ivana Chubbuck.
Lopez has appeared in numerous films and television shows, including "I Heart Huckabees," "The Burning Season," "Deep Cover," "Lightning Jack," "Love and Action in Chicago," and "Born in East L.A." She has also had recurring roles on shows such as "Medium," "Resurrection Blvd.," and "The Division."
In addition to her acting career, Lopez has also worked as a director. Her directorial feature film debut, "A Single Woman," won the 2009 Exceptional Merit in Media Award from the National Women's Political Caucus. Her short Spanish-language film "Ese Beso" won the Jury Award at the Senorita Cinema Festival and the Audience Award at the Boyle Heights Latina Film Festival.
Lopez has been recognized for her work as a director and actress, including winning the Imagen Award for her work on "21 Jump St." and the Ace Award for her work on "Crazy From The Heart."
