Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, known professionally as Katy Perry, was born on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California, to Mary Christine Hudson (née Perry) and Maurice Keith Hudson. She has a big sister named Angela and a little brother named David, and her ancestry is a mix of English, Portuguese, German, Irish, and Scottish. Her mother's half-brother is director Frank Perry.
Growing up in a deeply religious family, Perry's first experience of performing was singing in church. Her passion for music grew, and at the age of 15, she began visiting Nashville, gaining experience in songwriting and recording demos. She signed to a Christian record label, Red Hill, and recorded an album under her birth name, Katy Hudson. Although the album was not a success, it laid the foundation for her future music endeavors.
At the age of 17, Perry moved to Los Angeles and collaborated with producer Glen Ballard. Although she was unable to secure a lasting record deal, she continued to pursue her music career. In 2004, she signed to Columbia Records, but was eventually dropped due to the lack of commercial success.
An executive at Columbia recommended Perry to the chairman of Virgin Records, Jason Flom, which led to her signing with Capitol Music Group. She recorded her second album, "One of the Boys," and released the lead single, "I Kissed a Girl," in the spring of 2008. The song became a massive hit, topping the charts in several countries. The album was a commercial success, cementing Perry's position as a pop superstar.
Perry's subsequent albums, "Teenage Dreams" and "Prism," continued to spawn hit singles, including "California Gurls," "Firework," and "Roar." She has won numerous awards and broken several music industry records. In 2012, Perry made her acting debut with the documentary feature film "Katy Perry: Part of Me."
In addition to her music career, Perry has ventured into entrepreneurship. She has founded her own record label, Metamorphosis Music, and signed her first artist, Ferras, who had previously been signed to Capitol Records. Ferras released an EP on the same day as the label announcement, and Perry has also collaborated with him on a duet. The duo is expected to tour together in North America from June 22 to October 11.
