Kesey's literary debut occurred in 1962 with the publication of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", a novel inspired by his experiences working at a veterans hospital. During this period, he volunteered for LSD testing, which would later influence his writing. After penning his second novel, "Sometimes a Great Notion", Kesey purchased an old school bus, which he dubbed "Further". He then embarked on a cross-country road trip with a group of friends, including Neal Cassidy, who drove the bus while Kesey and his companions enjoyed LSD-laced Kool-Aid from pitchers in the cooler. This iconic journey, which took them from Oregon to New York's World's Fair, was later immortalized in Tom Wolfe's 1968 book, "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test".
