Born in Kinugasa, Japan, Sakurai spent his formative years in Cleveland, Ohio, where he developed a passion for the performing arts. As a child actor, he appeared in several notable films, including Kevin Smith's Dogma (1999) and Best of The Best 3 (1995).
Sakurai's early career also saw him transition into cinematography, working on projects such as Ry-Russo Young's You Wont Miss Me (2009) and Edwin Decena's Transformations (2006). He also lent his expertise to numerous "dirty south" hip-hop music videos.
