Clive Campbell, better known by his stage name DJ Kool Herc, is a pioneering Jamaican-American disc jockey and performer who is widely regarded as one of the key figures responsible for the inception of hip-hop music in the early 1970s. Born in Jamaica, Campbell's family relocated to the Bronx, New York City, where he grew up and developed a passion for music.
In 1973, Campbell organized a back-to-school party, dubbed the "Back to School Jam", which took place on August 11th at his sister's apartment located at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue. This event, which marked the beginning of hip-hop as we know it today, was a groundbreaking moment in music history.
