László Nemes, a renowned Hungarian film director and screenwriter, embarked on his journey on February 18, 1977, in the vibrant city of Budapest, Hungary. His childhood was spent in the charming metropolis of Paris, where he fostered an early and profound fascination with the art of filmmaking.
As the offspring of the illustrious film director András Jeles, Nemes' affinity for the cinematic arts was palpable from a tender age. This innate passion would eventually drive him to pursue a multifaceted educational trajectory, one that would see him delve into the realms of History, International Relations, and Screenwriting.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Nemes honed his skills as an assistant director in both France and Hungary, where he had the opportunity to work on a diverse array of short and feature films.
Nemes spent a considerable amount of time, specifically two years, honing his skills and gaining invaluable expertise as the trusted assistant to the renowned and highly acclaimed director Béla Tarr. This stint provided him with a unique opportunity to delve deeply into the intricacies of filmmaking, allowing him to absorb and learn from the masterful guidance of his mentor.
Following this enriching experience, Nemes went on to direct his debut short film, With a Little Patience, shot on 35-mm film, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.
In the year 2011, a prestigious scholarship was granted to Nemes, permitting him to spend a prolonged period of five months in the City of Light, specifically Paris, where he had the opportunity to collaborate with the talented Clara Royer, a creative partner who shared his vision, to meticulously develop the script for his debut feature film, a cinematic masterpiece titled Son of Saul.
