Leonard Smith, a renowned cinematographer, embarked on a illustrious career spanning over three decades, boasting an impressive portfolio of over 70 film credits from 1915 to 1946.

His professional journey commenced with the 1915 silent film, The Battle Cry of Peace, which unfortunately no longer exists. Throughout his career, Smith occasionally ventured into the camera and electrical department, showcasing his versatility as a cinematographer.

Smith's exceptional work earned him several Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography (color). His first nomination arrived in 1942 for Billy the Kid, shared with William V. Skall. In 1944, he received a nomination for Lassie Come Home, and in 1946, he was nominated once more for National Velvet. Just prior to his untimely death, Smith received his sole win in 1947 for The Yearling, sharing the award with Arthur Arling and Charles Rosher. Smith's nominations and wins were exclusively in the Color category.

Leonard Smith held the esteemed position of president of the American Society of Cinematographers from 1941 until his passing on October 20, 1947, at the age of 53.
