Biography

Lisbeth Gruwez's journey in the world of dance began at the tender age of six, when she started classical ballet training. This early start ultimately led to her admission into the prestigious Stedelijk Instituut voor Ballet in Antwerp, where she could combine her passion for dance with her high school education.

After completing her studies, Lisbeth went on to further her training at P.A.R.T.S., where she honed her skills in contemporary dance.

Since 1999, Lisbeth has had the privilege of working with the renowned Jan Fabre, performing in various productions, including As Long As the World Needs a Warrior's Soul and Je suis sang, a production for the Cour d'Honneur in Avignon.

In 2001, Lisbeth starred in Pierre Coulibeuf's film Les Guerriers de la beaute, which showcased Jan Fabre's work. The following year, she took on the lead role in Images of Affection, a production by Needcompany, under the direction of Jan Lauwers.

In 2003, Lisbeth collaborated with Grace Ellen Barkey on Few Things and Cry Me a River, a production by Riina Saastamoinen. She also had the opportunity to work with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui on the production Foi.

Jan Fabre created the production Quando l'uomo principale e una donna specifically for Lisbeth in 2004, and she also participated in the installation l'Origine alongside Peter Verhelst.

In 2006, Lisbeth co-founded Voetvolk with Maarten Van Cauwenberghe, and the following year, they premiered their first creation, Forever Overhead.

In 2008, Lisbeth danced with Melanie Lane in a production by Arco Renz and had a leading role in the film Lost Persons Area, directed by Caroline Strubbe. The film received a nomination at the Cannes film festival, and Lisbeth was nominated for Best Female Actress at the Flemish Movie Awards.

That same year, she created the performance Birth of Prey, which is still touring today.

In 2009, Lisbeth choreographed and danced alongside Juliette Lewis in a video-clip for her band Juliette & the Licks.

In 2010, she created her first group performance, HeroNeroZero, and took on the lead role in a short film by Silvia Defranc.

In 2011, Lisbeth created the performances L'Origine and It's going to get worse and worse and worse, my friend, which is currently on tour.
