Hume Dawson was born in Cwmbran, South Wales, to an African father and a Yorkshire mother, and spent her early years in her father's native country of Sierra Leone, initially settling in Freetown and later in Kenema. During her childhood, she would often visit Yorkshire, eventually settling there permanently at the age of 11.
Hume's early education took place at Holmfirth High School, where she developed strong ties with the local community. Prior to pursuing a career in the performing arts, she trained as a hairdresser and went on to own two successful salons in Huddersfield. After selling her businesses, she enrolled in a 2-year BTEC course in Performing Arts at Barnsley Electric Theatre.
Her success in this course led to her being accepted into higher-level drama courses, and she subsequently trained at the Capitol Theatre, which is affiliated with Manchester Metropolitan University. Throughout her career, Hume has worked extensively with youth drama groups, including a 2-year stint as the Youth Theatre director at the Palace Theatre in Redditch.
During her time at the Palace Theatre, she also took on the role of Acting Artistic Director, directing main house productions in addition to her regular duties. As an actor, Hume has appeared in a range of television shows, including two series of the BBC drama "Bodies" and four series of "The Four o-Clock Club". She has also made guest appearances in other popular television programs, such as Victoria Wood's sitcom "dinnerladies" in 1998.
In her personal life, Hume is married to Matthew and has one daughter.
