Lotfy Nathan, a multifaceted creative force, hails from Egypt but was raised in London, blending British and American influences in his work. As a writer-director, Nathan's early documentary, "12 O'Clock Boys", garnered widespread acclaim, earning him the HBO Emerging Artist Award and securing spots in over 50 international film festivals, including SXSW, Sundance LA, Lincoln Center, Viennale, Hot Docs, London, and Copenhagen.
The documentary's success led to distribution deals with Oscilloscope in the United States, Showtime, Amazon, and an option from Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment to adapt it into a drama. Nathan's recognition continued with the Creative Capital award in 2015 and a residency at the Cinereach Foundation.
Prior to his narrative feature film debut, Nathan had received support from various organizations, including the Garrett Scott Fund, the Peter Reed Foundation, the Grainger Marburg Fund, and the IFP Fellowship. His debut feature, "Harka", which he developed through the Sundance Film Institute's Writing Workshop, premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, where it won the Best Performance Award for lead actor Adam Bessa.
