Biography

Lucy Roucis, a true inspiration, exemplified the power of resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity. Her early-onset Parkinson's disease, which would have potentially derailed the career of a lesser individual, instead led to a life-changing opportunity when she landed a part in the 2010 film Love & Other Drugs. Director Edward Zwick, impressed by her audition, asked her to write her own dialogue for the scene, showcasing her talent and wit.

Born in Denver, Colorado, Lucy was raised by a dentist father and homemaker mother, alongside her five siblings. She received a private education and went on to attend Loretto Heights College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre, Magna cum Laude. Following her graduation, Lucy moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming an actress, where she became a long-time student of renowned acting coach Roy London.

Lucy's early career saw her landing roles in films such as The Party Animal (1984) and Better Off Dead (1985),as well as appearing in television commercials and print ads. She also had the opportunity to showcase her talents on stage, performing in productions such as the Los Angeles-based Radio City Music Hall Rockettes Christmas Spectacular and the Colony Theatre's production of the musical 'The Robber Bridegroom'.

However, Lucy's life took a dramatic turn when she was diagnosed with both Parkinson's disease and thyroid cancer. Despite undergoing successful treatment for her thyroid cancer, Parkinson's remains incurable, leaving Lucy feeling defeated and forced to abandon her Hollywood dreams. Instead, she reinvented herself as an actress with a disability, finding work and a sense of purpose through her involvement with the PHAMALY (Physically Handicapped Actors and Musical Artists League, Inc.).

Lucy went on to star in 20 productions with PHAMALY, earning a Best Supporting Actress in a Musical award from WestWord Magazine for her portrayal of 'Miss Adelaide' in 'Guys and Dolls'. She also appeared in the pilot episode of the disability-focused news program 'One Step Ahead', serving as its Cultural Correspondent.

In recognition of her tireless advocacy work and unwavering dedication to disability awareness, Lucy received the Mayor's Award for being an Unsung Hero in 2008. The following year, she underwent deep brain stimulation at the Cleveland Clinic, which temporarily alleviated the symptoms of her advanced Parkinson's disease.

Throughout her journey, Lucy found her voice as an advocate for Parkinson's and disability awareness, using her wit and humor to spread awareness and inspire others. She also worked as a stand-up comedian, co-hosting fundraisers with comedian Josh Blue, and taught/coached acting in Denver, while also writing and pursuing outreach work in schools.
