Lulu Keating, born in 1952, is a multifaceted and highly productive artist whose work traverses the boundaries of film and video, effortlessly blending elements of fiction, animation, experimental, and documentary genres. Her artistic endeavors are deeply rooted in her connection to Canada, with a strong presence felt across the country, from the maritime province of Nova Scotia, where she spent several years, to the vibrant city of Vancouver, British Columbia, and even the remote town of Dawson City in the Yukon Territory.
Throughout her illustrious career, Lulu has been an integral part of the creative community of artists working with the moving image, actively contributing to the artistic landscape through her collaborations with various organizations. In Halifax, she was a driving force behind the Linda Joy Media Arts Society and the Atlantic Filmmakers' Co-operative, leaving a lasting impact on the local artistic scene.
In addition to her numerous short films that explore the realms of hand processing and personal narrative, Lulu has also directed two feature-length films. The first, The Midday Sun (1989),was a groundbreaking achievement, as it was the first Canadian feature film to be shot entirely in Africa, specifically in Zimbabwe. Her second feature, Lucille's Ball (2013),was created in collaboration with the Women in the Director's Chair Feature Film Award and was made possible with the support of the Vancouver-based production team.
Lucille's Ball received widespread acclaim on the festival circuit, earning the prestigious Best Canadian Feature Film Award at the Female Eye Festival in Toronto and capturing the Leo Award for Best Editing in Vancouver.
