Botswana-born and Canadian-raised, Malia Baker rose to prominence with her remarkable performance as Mary Anne Spier in Netflix's critically acclaimed series, The Baby-Sitter's Club, which premiered in 2020 and earned her a Family Emmy nomination for Best Youth Performance. Baker's impressive portrayal of the iconic character further solidified her status as a talented young actress, and her dedication to her craft was recognized with a nomination for Favorite Female TV Star at the 2022 Kids Choice Awards for her work on both The Baby-Sitter's Club and Nickelodeon's reimagined horror anthology classic, Are You Afraid of The Dark?
In addition to her work on The Baby-Sitter's Club and Are You Afraid of The Dark?, Baker has made appearances on popular television shows such as The Flash and A Million Little Things, and has starred as the lead in the Lifetime movie Caught in His Web, executive produced by the esteemed Whoopi Goldberg. Her upcoming projects include starring alongside industry titans Paul Bettany, Carmen Ejogo, and Candice Bergen in Miramax's dramedy Harvest Moon, which is being directed by Mark Waters; the Independent Feature Spider & Jesse, where she joins Jesse Williams, McKenna Grace, and Dacre Montgomery; and the Disney+ movie The Descendants: The Rise Of Red, which features a star-studded cast including Brandy and Rita Ora.
Baker has also expanded her creative horizons by joining as producer on the award-winning script, 12 Hours, as well as executive producer and star in Hair of the Bear, an indie survival drama marking the narrative feature debut of co-directors Alexandre Trudeau and James McLellan.
In addition to her impressive professional accomplishments, Baker has been recognized as one of Seventeen magazine's Voices of the Year and Refinery29 Canada's Powerhouses for her dedication to using her platform to speak up and show up for social justice issues, with a particular focus on girls' and women's rights. Baker has contributed to conversations and publications for girls around the world on topics such as their rights, equality, girlhood, mental health, violence prevention, and being a changemaker. She currently serves as a Champion for the UN initiative, GirlUp, and as the first ever youth Global Ambassador for the organization, She's the First.
