Mariza's origin story begins on December 16, 1973, in the vibrant city of Lourenço Marques, Portuguese Mozambique, where her Portuguese father and mother with partial African heritage first set eyes on their little bundle of joy, Marisa dos Reis Nunes, affectionately known as Mariza.
From a tender age, Mariza embarked on a musical journey, exposing herself to a diverse array of styles, which would eventually shape her unique artistic identity. Gospel, soul, and jazz resonated deeply with her, serving as a foundation for her future endeavors. However, it was her father who played a pivotal role in guiding her towards the traditional Portuguese music of fado. He recognized the cultural significance of fado and believed that embracing this genre would not only enhance her musical abilities but also foster a deeper connection with the Portuguese community, ultimately granting her greater acceptance and understanding within that cultural context.
