His mother took him to Santa Barbara to see a movie, which just so happened to be the 1962 classic, The Music Man. Although initially hesitant, Mark was drawn in by Robert Preston's captivating performance and found himself watching the film twice. This pivotal moment sparked a newfound passion for acting within him.
After completing high school, Mark made the bold decision to forgo a scholarship to study law at the University of Southern California and instead pursue his dreams of becoming an actor. He went on to train at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, the University of Washington Professional Actor's Training Program, and even had the opportunity to study under renowned artists such as Robert Lewis.
Mark's early acting career took him to regional theaters in Seattle, where he landed his first Equity job at the Seattle Rep. He continued to work tirelessly in various regional theaters, including the Mark Taper Forum, South Coast Rep, and Circle in the Square.
In 1981, Mark made his way to New York with an ambitious goal in mind - to secure a role in a Broadway show within his first month. Miraculously, he achieved this feat in just five weeks, landing parts in Brigadoon and Macbeth. Mark's success was capped off when he was cast in the film Porky's alongside his friend Boyd Gaines, who was also cast in the production.
Following the completion of Porky's, Mark returned to New York to act in the original off-Broadway cast of Sister Mary Ignatius. As fate would have it, Porky's was simultaneously opening to great acclaim, making Mark the proud actor of the number one movie in the world and the number one show in New York at the same time.
