Mark Millar is a renowned writer of numerous bestselling comic books, including Jupiter's Legacy, Kick-Ass, Kingsman, The Magic Order, Wanted, Old Man Logan, Marvel Civil War, and Superman: Red Son. He is also the President of Netflix's Millarworld Division in Los Angeles and serves as an executive producer on all his Hollywood properties.
Millar's career in the comic book industry began in the summer of 2000 when Marvel brought him in to revitalize their line. He worked with top artists and launched Ultimate X-Men, rethinking The Avengers and shattering sales numbers with The Ultimates. He also created the Marvel Civil War storyline in 2006, which became Marvel's most financially successful event of the 21st century and their best-selling graphic novel of all time.
The Ultimates served as a template for the 2012 Avengers movie, and both Civil War and Old Man Logan inspired two blockbuster movies of the same name. Red Son, his Superman book, is the highest-selling Superman graphic novel in history and was adapted into an animated movie in 2020.
Millar decided to create his own characters while still working at Marvel, leading to the creation of Millarworld. His first comic book under the Millarworld banner was Wanted, which became a huge hit and spawned a 2008 movie starring Angelina Jolie. The success of Wanted paved the way for the adaptation of his Kick-Ass comic in 2010, starring Nicolas Cage.
Quitting Marvel soon after, Millar focused on Millarworld and co-created numerous properties, including Jupiter's Legacy, The Magic Order, American Jesus, Super Crooks, Sharkey The Bounty Hunter, Empress, Superior, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Chrononauts, Starlight, Nemesis, Space Bandits, MPH, and Huck.
Kingsman was released as a movie in 2015 and has since spawned at least one sequel. Netflix bought Millarworld in 2017, hiring Mark and his wife Lucy to act as President and CEO of their Millarworld line and develop comic books into big-budget original movies, shows, and animated series.
The first Netflix series based on Millar's work is Jupiter's Legacy, which premiered in 2021. Other properties in production or development include Super Crooks, Huck, Sharkey The Bounty Hunter, Space Bandits, The Magic Order, Prodigy, and more. Millar still co-owns Kick-Ass and Kingsman independently.
Throughout his career, Millar has received numerous industry awards and honors, including Eagles, Eisners, UKCAC, Speakeasy, and Wizard awards. He has also won the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland award for writing, the Scottish Press Awards Hall of Fame, the SFX Award for Best Comic, Time Magazine's Comic-Book of the Decade, and two GLAAD awards for excellence.
Millar was awarded an honorary doctorate for literature from Glasgow Caledonia University in 2012 and received an MBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace in 2013 for services to Film and Literature.
Born on December 24th, 1969, in Coatbridge, Scotland, Millar is the youngest of six children. He is married to Lucy Millar, CEO of Netflix's Millarworld Division, and has three daughters.
