Born on October 13, 1933, in Moscow, USSR, Zakharov's father, a Red Army soldier, fought in the Russian Civil War of 1918-1920, while his mother, an actress, nurtured his passion for the performing arts from a young age.

Growing up in Moscow, Zakharov was encouraged by his mother to pursue his dreams of becoming an actor. Despite facing rejection multiple times, he persevered and eventually graduated from the acting school of the State Theatre Institute in 1955.
