Matthew Moul, a Primetime Emmy-winning producer, editor, and director, was born in 1973 in Iowa. He is based in New York and has been working in the industry for 18 years.
Moul's first documentary feature film, SURVIVING HOME, was a critical and commercial success. The film, which he co-directed with Jillian Moul, explores the experiences of U.S. military veterans from multiple generations. It won several awards, including Best Film at the Chicago International Social Change Film Festival, and was distributed on PBS's America ReFramed and Amazon.
The film was praised by critics, with From the Scene Chicago Magazine noting that "The way the Mouls perceive and frame their subjects lifts SURVIVING HOME into the lofty realm of Documentary Artistry."
In 2019, Moul was Co-Executive Producer of the Netflix documentary series, DIAGNOSIS. The series, which was produced by Scott Rudin and Lightbox's Jonathan Chinn and Simon Chinn, in association with the New York Times, explored the experiences of people living with undiagnosed illnesses.
According to NPR, "Where the series really shines is in expanding the vision beyond mystery and into explorations of how being sick, particularly without much hope for any effective treatment, affects people's lives."
Moul was also Co-Executive Producer and Editor of Lightbox's 2015 documentary series, THE RUNNER-UP. The series was a critic's pick in the Los Angeles Times and explored the experiences of people who had been eliminated from a competition.
In the Spanish language market, Moul was Co-Executive Producer of Netflix's MADE IN MEXICO. The series, which was described by The RInger as "devastatingly effective," explored the experiences of people living in Mexico.
As a producer and editor, Moul has worked with a number of networks, including HBO, Showtime, Netflix, Amazon, HBO Max, Starz, PBS, and AMC. He has been nominated for three Emmy Awards as an editor and was part of the bilingual team that earned a Peabody Award for KCET's educational series, A PLACE OF OUR OWN/LOS NIÑOS EN SU CASA.
Moul graduated from the University of Southern California.
