Matthew Principe is a versatile and innovative creative professional who effortlessly navigates the worlds of classical music performance, pop culture, and digital media. He is the LiveStream Director for Boston Baroque, streaming internationally from GBH Studios, and also holds the position of Director of Innovation at Detroit Opera, where he collaborates with Artistic Director Yuval Sharon on digital media and innovative storytelling.
Prior to his current roles, Matthew was the Line Producer of the Metropolitan Opera's Grammy, Emmy, and Peabody Award-winning Live in HD series, transmitting live opera performances to movie theaters in 70 countries worldwide. He was also Associate Producer of the Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcasts on SIRIUS / XM Satellite Radio, broadcasting over 1000 live broadcasts throughout North America and online.
Matthew has worked with a wide range of performers and institutions, including the American debut of Israeli electro pop band The Young Professionals for the Park Avenue Armory Gala. He has also been involved in various stage projects, such as the GLAAD Media Award-winning production of Candy & Dorothy with frequent collaborator Kevin Newbury, and the avant-garde monster opera, Sasquatch, written by Roddy Bottum.
As an independent film producer, Matthew has overseen development, production, and distribution for projects such as the Award-winning short films, Monsura is Waiting and Stag (dir. Kevin Newbury). His latest short film project, Epiphany V, is a narrative told through dance inspired by the music of Peruvian composer Jimmy López, also directed by Newbury.
Matthew is a strong advocate for queer voices in the arts and culture, and has worked to promote diversity and inclusion in hiring practices and representation in media. He has been named in Instinct Magazine's "2018 Bears you Should Know" and has served as Co-Chair of the Producers Guild of America's Diversity Committee from 2018-2020.
Matthew holds a degree in Vocal Performance from Temple University and has previously worked as the Assistant/Acting Orchestra Personnel Manager for The Philadelphia Orchestra, producing over 120 performances annually. He has also collaborated with various arts institutions, including the Santa Fe Opera, Opera Orlando, The Cleveland Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, National Sawdust, American Composers Forum, and Columbia Artists Management Inc.
Matthew serves on the board of the art song platform Sparks & Wiry Cries and the Artistic Advisory committee for MasterVoices.
