Sol Trell, Max's father, had made the bold decision to leave his homeland in 1884, eventually settling in America, where he would go on to establish a thriving cigar shop in the Bronx by the turn of the century. Sophie Trell, Max's mother, was born within the borders of New York City, her ancestry tracing back to Russian and German immigrants who had made the city their home.

Max Trell's personal life took a significant turn in 1924 when he tied the knot with Bluma L. Popkin, a remarkable individual who would later choose to leave behind her promising legal career to become an esteemed authority on ancient Greek culture.

As Bluma's academic pursuits flourished, she went on to become a retired professor emeritus at New York University, a testament to her dedication and expertise. Tragically, her life came to a close on June 10, 1997, at the ripe age of 94.
