Melissa Auf der Maur was born in the vibrant city of Montreal, Canada, to Linda Gaboriau, a talented DJ, and Nick Auf der Maur, a renowned rock journalist. However, Melissa has candidly shared that her father was largely absent from her life, which may have had a profound impact on her upbringing.
Melissa's early life was marked by a passion for the performing arts, and she attended F.A.C.E., a prestigious performing arts school in Montreal. During her time at F.A.C.E., she was actively involved in various extracurricular activities, including choir, piano, and trumpet. It was during this period that Melissa had a profound dream about the influential rock band Kyuss, which ultimately inspired her to learn how to play the bass guitar.
Melissa's journey as a musician began when she joined a local band called Tinker. It was during this time that she forged a close friendship with Billy Corgan, who would later play a significant role in her career. Tragedy struck in June 1994 when Kristen Pfaff, the bassist of the iconic rock band Hole, tragically passed away due to a heroin overdose. Billy Corgan, recognizing Melissa's talent and dedication, suggested that she take over Kristen's position in the band.
Melissa's tenure with Hole lasted until October 1999, when she left the band to join the legendary rock group The Smashing Pumpkins. However, after her time with The Smashing Pumpkins, Melissa returned to her first love, photography. She has since dedicated herself to this creative outlet, showcasing her unique perspective and artistic vision through her work.
