As a young scholar, Michael embarked on an academic odyssey, initially delving into the realms of Acting and Playwrighting at the esteemed University of Alberta and the renowned Banff School of Fine Arts.
Fast-forwarding to the year 1986, Michael's artistic journey took a remarkable turn as he joined the Resident Acting Company of Edmonton's Family Theatre, Stage Polaris, an esteemed institution that would provide him with invaluable opportunities to hone his craft.
Not long after this significant milestone, Michael began to share his expertise with the next generation of performers by teaching Performing Arts classes at the Stage Polaris Academy of Drama, a testament to his dedication to the art form and his desire to inspire and educate others.
Michael's professional trajectory continued to ascend as he gained membership in the esteemed Canadian Actors' Equity Association in the year 1988. Concurrently, he devoted himself to refining his artistic abilities as a street performer, exhibiting a mastery of fire juggling and clowning, as well as collaborating with his friends in a rock band aptly titled Big Inc. As a seasoned festival performer, Michael embarked on a thrilling journey, traversing the vast expanse of Western Canada, Ottawa, and the United States. His impressive repertoire of performances took him to the renowned Orlando and New York Fringe Festivals, solidifying his reputation as a talented and versatile artist.
Michael's professional journey began in 1996 when he was appointed as a Councillor for the Edmonton ACTRA Branch, a prestigious organization that represents the interests of film and television artists in Alberta. As he gained experience and built a reputation within the organization, Michael went on to serve as President, a position that further solidified his leadership skills and deepened his understanding of the industry. Additionally, he also served as an Alternate National Councillor, a role that allowed him to connect with like-minded individuals across the country and stay abreast of the latest developments in the sector.
In the world of politics, Michael made his mark in the 2000 provincial election when he represented the Alberta New Democratic Party in the Castledowns riding. Although he ultimately finished in third place behind the Liberal and Conservative parties, his presence in the election served as a testament to his commitment to public service and his willingness to take on new challenges.
Michael parted ways with Edmonton's unforgiving winters in the year 2001, making the bold decision to relocate to Vancouver, a city that would provide him with a more conducive environment to nurture his fervent passion for the performing arts. Michael's political trajectory continued as he took on the role of representing the New Democrats in the North Vancouver riding, a position he held for two consecutive federal elections, specifically the 2008 and 2012 elections.
