After abandoning his studies in the fine arts program at Wayne State University, Davis landed a coveted spot as the bassist for the iconic MC5 in 1964. He replaced original bassist Pat Burrows, whose departure was prompted by the band's lead vocalist Rob Tyner and guitarist Wayne Kramer, who were enamored with Davis's unique style and wanted him to join their group.
Throughout his tenure with the MC5, Davis played a pivotal role in the creation of the band's three original albums, including their groundbreaking debut, Kick Out the Jams. He remained an integral part of the group until 1972, leaving an indelible mark on the music world.
